Barefoot Massage Continuing Education for Massage Therapists

From foundational barefoot massage techniques to advanced Focus Series training, our courses help therapists develop longevity, versatility, and confidence in their barefoot practice.

Why Massage Therapists Choose Barefoot Massage

Many massage therapists discover barefoot massage after years of relying on their hands, wrists, and thumbs to deliver the pressure their clients need. By using the feet as a tool, therapists can apply broad, comfortable pressure with less physical strain while working from stronger, more efficient body mechanics. The result is often a treatment that feels both deeper and more relaxing for the client, without requiring the therapist to work harder. Beyond therapist longevity, barefoot massage opens the door to new ways of thinking about bodywork, creating opportunities for greater specificity, movement-based techniques, fascial work, and treatment versatility. Whether you're looking to protect your body, expand your skillset, or build a more sustainable career, barefoot massage offers a powerful path forward for both therapists and the clients they serve.

Benefits of Learning Barefoot Massage

While much of the conversation around barefoot massage focuses on therapist benefits, the client experience is often overlooked. Barefoot massage is about far more than delivering deep pressure or looking cool on social media. When practiced with skill and intention, it offers a unique combination of depth, comfort, and specificity that can be difficult to achieve with hands alone. The broad surface of the foot allows pressure to be distributed more evenly, helping tissues relax without the guarding and discomfort that can sometimes accompany deeper work. Techniques can be adapted to a wide range of treatment goals, from slow, nervous system-focused sessions to targeted fascial and movement-based approaches. This versatility allows therapists to customize each treatment while creating an experience that feels both therapeutic and deeply restorative.

Our Intro to Barefoot Massage course provides a strong foundation, while our Focused Series allows therapists to explore specialized applications of barefoot bodywork. Rather than climbing a ladder or following a prescribed path, therapists can choose their own adventure based on their interests, clients, and treatment goals. Each course offers a unique perspective and set of skills, making it easy to build a barefoot practice that feels authentic to the way you work.

Our Approach to Barefoot Massage Training

We may not be the biggest, oldest, or loudest voice in barefoot massage education, but we are deeply committed to helping therapists build meaningful, sustainable careers. At The LMT Refinery, our focus extends beyond teaching techniques. We help therapists develop the awareness, critical thinking, and confidence needed to apply barefoot bodywork with intention. Through, small in person classes, and practical application, our goal is simple: help therapists feel more capable and connected to the work they do every day. Although barefoot massage is at the heart of what we teach, our mission extends beyond any single modality. Through continuing education, business education, online resources, and mentorship, we strive to support therapists as whole professionals, not just practitioners .

Intentionally Small Class Sizes

We keep classes small to create a more personalized learning experience. Students receive hands-on guidance, individualized feedback, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions, troubleshoot challenges, and refine their skills.

Technique + Critical Thinking

Great therapists do more than memorize routines and protocols. Our courses emphasize clinical reasoning, observation, and adaptability so students understand not just how to perform a technique, but when, why, and for whom it may be most effective.

Built for Real Practice, Not Performance

Everything we teach is designed with the realities of practice in mind. Our focus is on practical skills, sustainable body mechanics, and treatment approaches that can be integrated into client sessions immediately, not techniques that only look impressive in a classroom or social media video.

Supporting the Whole Therapist

While barefoot massage is our specialty, our mission extends beyond any single modality. Through continuing education, business resources, mentorship, and professional development opportunities, we strive to support therapists as whole professionals throughout their careers.

  • No. Our Intro to Barefoot Massage course is designed for therapists who are new to barefoot bodywork and provides the foundational skills needed to work safely and effectively.

  • What is the difference between barefoot massage and Ashiatsu?

Ashiatsu is one style of barefoot massage, but the terms are often used interchangeably within the profession. Traditional Ashiatsu originated in Asia and was typically performed on a clothed recipient using compressive pressure. In the United States, modern Ashiatsu massage was popularized and adapted in the 1990s, often incorporating overhead bars and table-based techniques.

Over time, the term “Ashiatsu” has been used more broadly—and sometimes inaccurately—to describe a wide range of barefoot techniques that differ significantly from its traditional roots. This has led to both misuse of the term and concerns around cultural appropriation, as the original context and lineage are not always acknowledged.

Since then, barefoot bodywork has continued to evolve into a variety of therapeutic styles. At The LMT Refinery, we intentionally use the broader term barefoot massage to reflect this diversity and to be part of the ongoing evolution of the work, while honoring its origins and encouraging more accurate, respectful language within the profession.

  • For most therapists, Intro to Barefoot Massage is the best place to start. While it provides a strong foundation in barefoot bodywork, body mechanics, and how to use your foot as a treatment tool, it is not simply a beginner course. Many therapists who have previously trained in other barefoot massage programs have attended our Intro class and discovered new concepts, perspectives, and practical skills that significantly improved their work. That said, therapists with prior barefoot training are also welcome to jump directly into our Focused Series courses and choose the topics that best align with their interests, clients, and treatment goals.

  • Not always. While some barefoot massage techniques utilize overhead bars, courses like Grounded Flow explore bars-free applications using a low table and stability system.

  • Yes. The LMT Refinery is an NCBTMB Approved Continuing Education Provider, and many courses are also approved through CE Broker for Florida, Georgia, and Michigan massage therapists.

We are not NY endorsed, and we are currently working on obtaining MS, LA credentials.

  • Absolutely. Therapists from a variety of barefoot backgrounds attend our courses. While some classes may recommend prior barefoot experience, our Focused Series is designed to provide practical skills that complement many styles of barefoot practice.
